(To be clear, a result of 1–14 yields a more pedestrian black cat, crow, hawk, screech owl, toad, or weasel, and a result of 16–20 yields no familiar-better luck next year!) Special familiars include a quasit for a CN or CE caster, an imp for a LE or NE caster, a brownie for a LN or LG caster, and a pseudo-dragon for CG, NG, and N casters. Unfortunately, I can't fly with a Quasit. In Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, a magic-user that casts the spell find familiar could gain a special familiar according to the caster's alignment if the DM rolls (in secret, naturally) exactly 15 on 1d20. PS: Ultimately I would like the Pseudodragon or Imp over the rest for the flying ability, as if I'm a goblin, going by their strength stat and the limitations listed, they could feasibly hoist me into the air by rings attached to my armor as we soar into the sunset. So, my question to you lovely folk, is what are some good reasons I should choose the Pseudodragon, or what are cool things I can do with it? I'm already aware of the function as a translator, the Blind Sight (which is massive, but only at 10' range), and the sting/sleep effect being really nice, but how do they possibly beat out an invisible deadly devil who can see in magical darkness? What's really disappointing is the fact that the Pseudodragon in older editions was SUCH a cool creature, and it just seems thoroughly nerfed in 5E. The Quasit is tempting as well for some of the same things, but stats and skills wise it's just. The stats are better, the skills are better, the HP is better, the damage is better, it can go invisible, change shape, and more. Not like in a game-ruining way, but it's hard to validate choosing the other forms over the Imp. Given the expanded list of familiars, I personally think that the Pseudodragon is the coolest of the creatures, but not judging by stats and abilities.Ĭompared to the other options, the Imp is just broken. We're starting at level 3, and I'm planning on taking Pact of the Chain.
